So here is the story...
I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled out (funny concept I hope you all find the irony in what I am about to say). Anyway, the procedure went great, for a few days at least till I ended up with dry socket over a weekend and lots of pain, but that isn't my point. Monday morning bright and early I go in for the second procedure to get the dry socket fixed.
I am so deathly afraid of needles that my dentist decides to fully have me on nitrous oxide so that it calms me down. I have had this amazing anti anxiety gas multiple times and remembered the general feeling of just being high. I wanted to try something in the name of science so I tried to keep my mind fully intact during the gas coursing though my lungs.
After a few minutes i realized that i could tell it was in my system so I figured the best way to keep in control was to focus on something. First thing that I see is the illuminated light fixture that was showing a beach paradise scene. You know what I am talking about, the white sandy beach with the palm trees and the amazing blue water with the islands in the backdrop. That right there is what caught my mind, the islands in the background that when you think about aren't so beautiful. I began to think, why would they have these grayish black islands ruining the gorgeous view of the ocean, then it struck me, many a human mind cant focus on the beauty of nature without having a frame for it.
Many people find forest scenes so pretty because there are the trees surrounding everything, well on the ocean you have land mass which in order to catch these beach scenes, they need something behind them so it create a barrier for the eyes to focus on what they want. "The mind cannot focus on beauty unless it is spatially aware" you can quote me on that one.
This brings me to the same thinking frame of mind tonight when pondering back to my mind experience. Why does the ocean need to be framed, couldn't the water be the backdrop?
No... many people fear the ocean and water in mass quantities. You almost never see a picture of water without a boat or island or land in it to dim down the overpowering nature of water. The only times we see water by itself is when it is meant to be a scary picture of gray ominous mass of water lurking everywhere.

Tripping balls
Perhaps you are right, the palm trees in the foreground combined with the mountains in the background make me feel more at ease than the formless mass of the ocean's open waters. The dentist already has enough reasons to keep you from screaming, especially while tripping balls.
Hmm
Now I kind of want to see you stoned.
